Human papilomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted virus in the United States. About 20 million Americans are currently infected with the virus. Most HPV infections don’t cause any symptoms and resolve on their own but some of them cause cervical, vaginal and vulvar cancer in women. The virus can also cause anal and oropharyngeal cancers in both men and women. There is a vaccine available to prevent serious HPV infections in both men and women. If given early enough, the vaccine can prevent most cases of cervical, vaginal and vulvar cancers. For more information go to:
